Toric Contact Lens
Science and technology play a major role in every aspect of our life. We have experienced a lot of comfort due to many discoveries, inventions and development in the field of science. One such development in science is the advanced feature developed in the field of ophthalmology. Contact lens have been developed which has helped in replacing spectacles that are worn on the nose externally. Contact lens is worn on the cornea of the eye.
The contact lens generally serves the same corrective use as that of the spectacles. Consensus have been found out that a roughly an estimate 125 million people around the world use contact lens and in USA alone 28 to 38 million people are comfortable using contact lens.
People all over the world wear contact lens often for appearance and practicality. One of the important reasons being that contact lens is lightweight and invisible to the naked eye. Except when the lens are colored and can be easily identifiable.
One of the comfortable contact lens available today is the toric contact lens. It has been designed in such a way that it has two curvatures. One curvature is to correct astigmatism where the cornea is not perfectly round. And other is to correct either myopia (near-sight) or hyperopia (far-sight). It has been observed that some people have astigmatism in one eye alone. In such cases the ophthalmologist may prescribe toric lens for one eye and a normal spherical lens for the other eye.
The toric lens like any other lens is either soft or rigid gas permeable. Regular lenses have the same power through out, and there is no consequence of it moving all around the eye. The toric eye lenses have upper and lower power balance, as they are not spherically symmetrical. Due to this reason the toric lens must always maintain the same orientation in spite of the eye movement or else there shall be visual impairment.
The standard procedure of creating toric lenses is to make it slightly thicker at top but heavier at the bottom. The upper eyelid will allow the thicker portion to be pushed down during blinking because of which the lens will get adjusted to the correct position. Some lenses can be balanced both at the top and the bottom portion of the eye. Some opt for soft lenses as they more comfortable to wear. Some prefer RGP, as they hold on to the cornea better than the soft lens. The RGP lens helps people with better vision with astigmatism.
To fit toric lens needs a lot of expertise than the normal spherical lens and hence it is more expensive. Toric lens can be identified by the tiny striations or orientation marks which the user cannot see. The cost of manufacturing toric lenses is more expensive than the normal ones. There is a wide variety of Toric lenses available in the market today. Disposable type, easily replaceable, daily disposable, colored torics are some of the important features that are available to choose. With latest technology there are multifocal toric lenses for people who can wear a single lens and use it for reading, seeing far away things clearly as well as to correct astigmatism.
